GRANT HELPS CHILDREN IN WINDSOR WITH SPECIAL NEEDS GET ACTIVE AND LEARN NEW SPORTS
WINDSOR – Windsor West MPP Sandra Pupatello announced today that the Ministry of Health Promotion will give $27,645 to the Italian Canadian Handicapable Association Windsor & District to help kids with physical disabilities become more physically active and learn new sports.
“When you help kids get physically active you help them live longer, healthier lives,” said Pupatello. “Programs of this kind, especially ones that can adapt to meet the needs of those living with a physical disability, are invaluable as they start kids on the road to making physical activity part of their everyday lives.”
The local project is entitled “Sporting Health: After School Physical Fitness and Sport Program” and will be offered two afternoons a week. A new sport or activity will be introduced every week. The program is open to all children between the ages of 6 to 12, but focuses on children with physical disabilities.
This grant is one of more than 100 given out by the Ministry of Health Promotion to not-for-profit organizations across the province as part of the Communities in Action Fund (CIAF). The fund is designed to promote programs that will increase physical activity. The $5 million fund supports Ontario’s strategy to increase physical activity and sport participation. CIAF invests in community sport and physical activity and helps remove barriers to participation for children and youth, older adults, Aboriginal people, low-income families and people with a disability.
